Consumer magazines

Organisation A
Description
One of the largest publishing groups in the UK was concerned that its subscription marketing department was not working as effectively as it could.

Assignment Objective
Help the Group Managing Director to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the existing department and suggest how staff effectiveness could be improved. The solution involved departmental re-organisation; different working methods; revised IT systems and the acquisition of new direct marketing skills.

Organisation B
Description
A publisher of specialist consumer magazines was drowning in subscription data and unable to make sense of it.

Assignment Objective
Appraise the strengths and weaknesses of the existing method of collecting and analysing subscription data, and recommend an easier and more effective way of preparing budgets, forecasts and management reports.

Organisation C
Description
A well-known media organisation wanted to launch a magazine for the first time and needed to know how much start-up investment would be required.

Assignment Objective
Create the business development strategy and calculate, through circulation modelling techniques, the optimum circulation volumes, subscription revenues, marketing promotion costs, profits and cash flows.

Organisation D
Description
One of the largest magazine publishers in the UK was concerned that sales through traditional retail outlets alone was not maximising circulation sales opportunities.

Assignment Objective
Help the Group Marketing Director to establish a new department which would sell and support magazine sales through subscriptions. As a consequence, many of the company’s policies and procedures needed to be changed, a new and more appropriate organisation structure was required, and different personal skills needed to be acquired.
